You're reading: Yanukovych: European integration should unite government and opposition

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych is convinced that all Ukrainian politicians should contribute to the process of modernization of our country and European integration of Ukraine, he said today in Bratislava, answering questions about the Prosecutor General’s Office refusing to let Yulia Tymoshenko visit Strasbourg, according to the Press office of Yanukovych.

”I believe that Ukrainian politicians should have the world open before them,” he said. ”But I am not Prosecutor and I do not make these decisions,” he added. ”To Yulia Tymoshenko I wish that she proved her innocence in court and could continue to live, work, and do her favorite things, ” he said.

The President noted that his next week’s visit to Strasbourg aims to speed up European integration of Ukraine. ”I invite all my partners to cooperation in that area, including the opposition. I think this is a strategic question, which should unite our country today,” he said.

According to Yanukovych, Ukraine is carrying out the obligations it made to the Council of Europe step by step. One of such steps the President called the adoption of a new Criminal Procedure Code, which would be submitted to the Venice Commission. ”There is enough work for all, and I in no way prevent any members of political process in Ukraine from taking part in it,” Yanukovych said.
