You're reading: Yuschenko opposes Ukraine’s accession to Customs Union

Ukraine's third president (2005-2010) Viktor Yuschenko has said that the discussion about Kyiv's accession to the Customs Union conflicts with its integration into the European organizations and its free trade zone with the European Union.

"The free trade zone [with the EU countries] is not possible with the Customs Union. These are opposite things," Yuschenko told journalists in Kyiv on Thursday.

It is a plan to deprive Ukraine of its independence, he said.

The possible accession to the Customs Union "is an ill-thought out anti-Ukrainian position," he said.

Joining this Union would mean serious restrictions for Ukraine, he said.
