MINSK, Belarus (AP) — The government of Belarus has confirmed that the two men convicted of carrying out a deadly subway bombing in the capital last year have been executed.

The mother of one of the two 26 year olds said on Mar. 16 she had received official notification of the execution of her son, Vladislav Kovalyov.

State television reported late Mar. 17 that both Kovalyov and Dmitry Konovalov had been put to death with a shot to the back of the head.

The men were convicted of planting the bomb in Minsk’s busiest subway station that killed 15 people and wounded more than 300 in April.

Konovalov acknowledged his guilt, but Kovalyov insisted he did not participate.

Rights activists have condemned the executions, saying they deprive society of the opportunity to learn the truth.
