BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (AP) — Officials in the Republic of Congo say a native of Belarus was killed when a military helicopter crashed in the country's north.

A statement Wednesday from military officials named the pilot as Alexandre Kossiarev. They corrected their Tuesday statement that the victim was from Russia.

The helicopter crashed Tuesday in Badondo, some 500 miles (800 kilometers) north of the capital, Brazzaville.

Officials said three other people aboard were injured when the chopper tried to land after bad weather.

The MI-8, a Russian-designed helicopter, had been chartered by a mining company operating in the mineral-rich part of the country.

The Republic of Congo is often overshadowed by its much larger neighbor, Congo.
