CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — The leader of Moldova's separatist region of Trans-Dniester for the past 20 years could lose the position, according to preliminary results of a presidential ballot.

Official news agency Olvia press quotes the election committee saying that President Igor Smirnov came third in Sunday’s vote.

Olvia press said Wednesday that businessman Evgheni Shevciuk came first with 38.5 percent, while Smirnov garnered 26.5 percent.

All votes have been counted but Smirnov is contesting the results.

A run-off will take place between the first two candidates, but only after the election committee decides whether to cancel the ballot.

A decision on the issue, set for Wednesday, was postponed.

Trans-Dniester broke away from Moldova in 1990. It is not recognized internationally.
