MOSCOW - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with United Nations/Arab League Special Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan in Moscow on Sunday, March 25.

The meeting was held at the governmental airport, Vnukovo-2, before the president’s departure for South Korea and India, where Medvedev is due to attend a nuclear summit in Seoul and a meeting of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) heads of state in Delhi.

Russia would like to draw Annan’s attention to the unacceptability of outside support for the Syrian opposition and international backing of one party to the Syrian conflict, Russian Presidential Aide Sergei Prikhodko told Interfax earlier.

Moscow hopes Annan’s efforts will be aimed at persuading the Syrian opposition to sit down at the negotiating table with the authorities and reach a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

The president’s meeting with Annan is meant to demonstrate once again Russia’s full support for his mission to resolve the Syrian conflict, the Kremlin said.
