You're reading: Only one person seeking office of president of Moldova

CHISINAU - The president of the Supreme Council of Magistrates, Nicolae Timofti, is the only person to have applied to run for president of Moldova before the deadline of 5 p.m. on Monday to seek registration as a candidate.

In Moldova, the president is elected by parliament. The vote is set for Friday.

"Nicolae Timofti has submitted all the necessary documents, including an income declaration, a health certificate and signatures of [parliamentary] deputies in his support. He has submitted the signatures of all the 59 deputies from the Alliance for European Integration," Tudor Deliu, head of the parliamentary commission for the presidential election, told Interfax.

The commission would decide within the next couple of days whether or not to register Timofti, according to Deliu.
