The problem of Transdniestria needs to be resolved before Moldova's integration into the European Union, Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said.

“I don’t think that someone can afford the luxury of admitting a country having territorial problems to the European Union, like Cyprus. We perfectly understand that this won’t happen. A solution to the conflict will have to be found before we become an EU member,” Leanca said at a meeting with students from the Economic Knowledge Academy on Wednesday.

“This is a midterm goal,” Leanca said. “In the short term, absolutely no one has told us that this conflict prevents us from developing relations with the EU and, after that, become a candidate country,” he said.
