Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has asked Romanian diplomats to support Moldova and strengthen regional cooperation.

“I would like to ask you, all representatives of Romania in all countries, at all international organizations, to continue what we started quite long ago – to say that the Republic of Moldova is an absolute priority for Romania,” he said at an annual session of Romanian diplomats on Sep. 3.

He said that he had recently returned from Chisinau where he met the new government.

“This is the fourth prime minister of Moldova with whom I am working. I wished him that this pro-European Cabinet would have a long mandate. I like this government; it is close to us in spirit and aspirations. I learned that almost half of the Moldovan Cabinet members studied in Romania and the other half have Romanian citizenship,” Ponta said.

“Moldova needs support from Romania, including diplomatic, more than ever,” he said.

“I would want to ask you to use every opportunity to fight for the interests of Moldova the same as you are fighting for the interests of Romania. I believe this is a lawful position given the interests of Moldova, Romania and the very complex regional situation,” he said.

He also spoke in favour of the development of regional cooperation, pointing out the important role of Romania in the region.
