Eighty-five football fans have been arrested after scuffles between Ukrainian and Polish football fans in Kyiv on the day of the Europa League match between FC Zoria Luhansk and Legia Warsaw, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry said on Aug. 20.

The scuffles occurred yesterday. Among those arrested are two Poles, and one Polish fan and six Ukrainian ones have been charged with unlawful actions.

“Police arrested 85 fans, six of whom have been notified of being suspected of hooliganism. They hurled stones and explosive bags against police, other citizens and other fans. They are now in police custody. One fan, from Poland, has also been notified of being suspected of obstructing journalistic activity,” Kyiv police chief Oleksandr Tereschuk said at a briefing in Kyiv on Friday.

The Polish football fans were seen violating public order: they caused trouble at a cafe, turning over seats and flowerbeds, he said.

The police chief also said that one law enforcement officer and several passers-by were hurt as a result of the clashes; in addition, two Polish football fans sustained bodily injuries, but these are not serious.
