You're reading: Yanukovych thanks Shevchenko for excellent performance of the team at Euro 2012

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has met with the captain of the Ukrainian national football team Andriy Shevchenko and thanked him for successful performance of the team at the home championship of Euro 2012.

“We talked a lot about how well the European championship went, what
resonance occured in Europe and in the world because of its holding in
Ukraine and Poland. Everybody was satisfied. The president thanked
[Shevchenko] for the excellent performance of the Ukrainian team,” the
president’s press service quoted Shevchenko as saying after the meeting.

Yanukovych and Shevchenko discussed the development of football in
Ukraine. In particular, the famous football player stressed the
importance of holding football lessons at schools.

“This is very important, because there is great interest in football
after the European championship. I think that football is the number one
sport in Ukraine, and we should develop it,” the sportsman said.
