Ukraine’s interim government on April 23 accused Moscow of being involved in the murder of a regional Ukrainian politician as it prepared to launch a fresh crackdown on pro-Russian rebels who have seized government buildings in the east of the country.

The accusation came as Kiev confirmed that US assistance had been provided on the ground in Ukraine. “Consultations were provided by American specialists” said a spokesperson for the first deputy prime minister, who declined to elaborate.

Ukrainian officials would not say whether the American specialists were provided by the US government or if they were private contractors. The US Embassy in Kiev declined to comment.
