You're reading: Northern Donetsk region cleared of insurgents, part of Luhansk region border closed

Ukrainian senior military and security officials have reported to acting President Oleksandr Turchynov that as the result of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) the northern most area of Donetsk Oblast has been cleared of militants, their main stronghold in Semenivka has been destroyed and control over Krasnyi Lyman has been established.

The news was reported in an official statement published on the acting president’s website.

Also, government forces started shutting off the border with Russia in the north and east of Luhansk region, according to the statement.

Today saw the biggest losses yet among militants, which “opens up an opportunity for the center of the Donbas region to be freed in the near-term,” the statement quoted Turchynov as saying.
