PARIS — When he was falling three stories into a French courtyard one night in November, Sergei Bubka Jr. said, he did not have any flashbacks and there was no time to fear death.

“The circumstances went so fast I didn’t even manage to get scared,” said Bubka, 26, a Ukrainian professional tennis player ranked 277th in the world. “Once I was down and on the floor, hurt, then I was scared.”
