France strongly condemned escalating violence in eastern Ukraine, where deadly clashes between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian mobs erupted Saturday. Heavily armed pro-Russian forces attacked government buildings in Slovyansk and at least six other cities in the Donetsk region, many of them key transportation hubs. On Sunday, a Ukrainian special-forces officer was killed and five others were wounded in a gunbattle with pro-Russian men.
