Gennady Bogolyubov, already owner of the largest manganese miner in Australia, Consolidated Minerals, this year sought a tie-up with the second-largest, OM Holdings.

The deal, which would have created the world’s second-largest manganese producer, fell through in October after several months of talks. Nevertheless, Bogolyubov still holds an 11 percent stake in OM.

The Dnipropetrovsk native is co-founder, along with rich list No. 2 Ihor Kolomoisky, of the Privat Group, one of Ukraine’s most powerful financial and industrial groups.

One of its most visible arms is PrivatBank, the country’s largest commercial bank.

The billionaire has put a lot of effort into philanthropic activities this year through his Bogolyubov Foundation, which describes itself as a charitable organization “rooted in authentic Torah values.”

It works to support Jewish education, eradicate poverty and promote the Jewish religion and its cultural heritage.

As the president of the Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk, Bogolyubov met with Israeli President Shimon Peres during his visit to the city in November.

“Dnipropetrovsk Jews have created a most wonderful community. You have managed to do something unique for the Jewish people. You have united with one another in a way that is uncharacteristic of the Jewish people,” Peres said to him, according to local media reports.
