You're reading: Almost half of beaches on Dnipro River safe for recreation

Public beaches on the Dnipro River are safe for recreation, and the river water does not pose a serious threat to the health of holidaymakers, the Dniprovska environmental prosecutor's office has reported.

Deputy Prosecutor Oleksandr Cherepakha told Interfax-Ukraine that ahead of the summer season the prosecutor’s office conducted checks and found that all of the existing 61 beaches on the banks of the Dnipro River were not ready to receive vacationers. He said that after local authorities and regulators eliminated the problems that were recorded by the prosecutors, 27 of the beaches fully complied with sanitary and safety requirements.

“Today, 27 of the 61 beaches fully meet sanitary and safety requirements, and these are requirements for water quality, river bottom topography, and the quality of sand,” Cherepakha said.

He said that there are six such beaches in Kyiv, six in Cherkasy Oblast, one in Kremenchuk, seven in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, three beaches in Zaporizhia and four in Kherson.

“As for the rest of the beaches, their problems are systematic, from the need to replace the sand and serious inconsistencies in river bottom topography. In some cases there are problems with the legal regulation of issues concerning the use of beaches, in particular, land allocation and contractual relations between the owners,” Cherepakha said.

He said that efforts to address these problems on the beaches are continuing.
