You're reading: Another defendant in Odesa May 2 trial released, placed under house arrest

ODESA - A court in Odesa's Malynovsky District has decided to release yet another defendant in the case over the May 2, 2014 events in Odesa (specifically, the events in Greek Square) by placing him under a house arrest.

The court thus partially accepted the defense petition for the release of the defendants who are still held in custody, an Interfax correspondent reported.

Motivating its decision, the court said that Oleksandr Sukhanov has two young children and mother who has reached the retirement age, and has been favorably characterized by neighbors. Under the house arrest conditions, Sukhanov is not allowed to leave the house between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. and must wear an electronic tag.

Meanwhile, the court refused to release and place under house arrest five more defendants, including two Russian citizens, because in the court’s opinion, they could harass witnesses, pervert the course of justice and also leave Ukraine.

The court has adjourned the hearing until Oct. 15.

It was reported that 48 people were killed and over 200 injured during clashes in Odesa on May 2, 2014. The court started hearing the case (concerning the events in Greek Square) in late 2014. However, the trial has protracted for various reasons. As of September, the court has been releasing the defendants, who had been held in custody, and placing them under house arrest.
