You're reading: At least 2,112 soldiers killed in Russia’s war against Ukraine

Military and civilian casualties are mounting as tension remains high in cities on the eastern war front, including Shyrokyne, Berdianske, Luhanske and Toshkivka, according to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

More than 80 Ukrainian soldiers were killed after a cease-fire that never took hold went into effect on Feb. 15, according to President Petro Poroshenko. More than 400 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded during this time.

While Poroshenko said on May 8 that 1,675 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the war, the Kyiv Post estimates that at least 2,112 soldiers have been killed, based on official reports, local media sources and information from relatives.

At least 6,238 people have been killed and 15,594 wounded, according to the United Nations.

The following is the list of those known to be killed through April 13 – May 11:

April 13

Bohdan Honcharenko, 23, a soldier of the 25th transport aviation brigade from Zaporizhzhya Oblast. He was killed when a shrapnel hit atrench shelter where Honcharenko was together with his four comrades. His death was instant. Honcharenko spoke to his mom in early hours of April 13 and later in the day, she found out about her son’s death. Honcharenko leaves his family in Melitopol in Zaporizhzhya Oblast.

Dmytro Hura, 27, a soldier of the 40th tank brigade from Kyiv Oblast. He was mobilized to Ukrainian army in August and had been in the warzone since November. He was killed near the city of Avdiivka in Donetsk Oblast. Hura leaves his parents, a sister and a brother inKyiv Oblast.

April 14

Oleksandr Karmylchyk, 33, a soldier of the 93rd mechanized brigadefrom Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Karmylchyk was killed near Pisky in Donetsk Oblast. “We were hoping that the news about his death is not true,” Karmylchyk’s neighbors were quoted as saying during the mourning. He leaves a wife and 8-year-old son in Rakiv village in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.

April 15

Oleksandr Chertsov, a soldier of the Carpathian Sich volunteer group from Kramatorsk. Chertsov was helping doctors at the medical unit in Pisky village in Donetsk Oblast when a shell hit the building. Chertsov was killed with a shrapnel, his death was instant.

April 18

Georgiy Dzhanelidze, 41, a soldier of Azov Battalion. Dzhanelidze, Georgian native, used to leave in Turkey, but decided to move to Ukraine after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. The body of Dzhanelidze had been mined to kill those who tried to recover his body. He was shot to death in Shyrokyne village in Donetsk Oblastafter hoisting a Georgian and Ukrainian flag on territory controlled by the Kremlin’s insurgents. He leaves a wife and three children.

April 21

Viktor Yarmoshevych, 44, a soldier of the 55th artillery brigade from Kirovohrad Oblast. Yarmoshevych used to work as a police officer, but later volunteered to the east of Ukraine. He was killed near Avdiivkain Donetsk Oblast. Yarmoshevych was mourned in his native town of Sablyne, where his family lives.

April 24

Volodymyr Zharkov, 42, a soldier of Novomoskovskiy training center. He had been working at the local chemical plant before he was mobilizedto the army. Zharkov was badly wounded near Pisky in Donetsk Obalst; he has lost his legs and died later in one of Dnipropetrovsk city hospitals. He leaves a wife and two children in Dniprodzerzhynsk.

April 25

Kostyantyn Malukhin, 32, one of the units’ commander of Donbas Battalion of Ukraine’s National Guard. He was badly wounded during ashelling of Shyrokyne village in Donetsk Oblast. He died on his way to hospital. “We lost him, there’re no tears, no pathetic words,” Malukhin comrade, Dmytro Babkin, posted to his Facebook page on April 25. Malukhin leaves his wife and children in Kyiv.

April 27

Oleksandr Porosyuk, 37, a soldier of the 72nd mechanized brigade fromPoltava Oblast. He used to work as a social worker for the local volunteer center that helps children. Porosyuk was mobilized to the army in March. He leaves a mother and 14-year-old daughter he raised himself in a city of Kremenchuk.

April 30

Serhiy Badunenko, 27, a soldier of the 41th mechanized battalion from Chernihiv Oblast. He was killed when he stepped a land mine near avillage of Starohnativka in Donetsk Oblast.

Ivan Soroka, 30, a soldier of the 41st mechanized battalion. Soroka was killed on his birthday as he stepped on a land mine near the village of Starohnativka in Donetsk Oblast. “He was one of the most cheerful guys at our checkpoint,” Soroka’s comrade, Albert Chereshko, was quoted as saying. He leaves his family in Chernihiv Oblasts’s Horodnya town.

May 2

Ivan Sotnyk, 27, Ukrainian National Guard soldier from Volyn Oblast. Sotnyk was badly wounded in the fight for the village of Shyrokyne in Donetsk Oblast. He died later in one of Mariupol city hospitals. Sotnyk’s compatriots kneeled down when his body arrived to Lutsk. “I’m sorry for all those people who were wandering around the city and didn’t show up to commemorate you, my friend,” Natalya Aryvanyuk, a volunteer who knew Sotnyk, posted to her Facebook page.

May 3

Dmytro Afanasiev, 31, a soldier of OUN volunteer battalion from Kramatorsk. He was a part-time learner of the law faculty of National University “Ostroh Academy.” However, Afanasiev was dismissed after he volunteered to the war zone. He was badly wounded during the shelling in Pisky village in Donetsk Oblast and died later in a hospital.

Volodymyr Voronin, 27, a soldier of the 17th tank brigade from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He was mobilized to the army in August and was killed near the village of Orikhovo-Vasylivka in Donetsk Oblast. Voronin used to work as a wireman at Pavlograd city coalmine. “He was purpose-driven young man, who had his dreams for the future, but they will never happen,” one of Voronin’s bosses, Serhiy Vyshneviy, said. “He never had his own family.” He leaves his parents in Pavlograd.

Arkadiy Chukhnov, 39, a soldier of the 17th brigade from Khmelnytskiy Oblast. Chukhnov was mobilized to the army in February. His vehicle hit a landmine near the village of Katerynivka in Luhansk Oblast. He leaves a wife and 13-year-old son in Kamianets-Khmelnytskiy.

May 5

Oleksandr Shchurov, 39, a soldier of the 95th airborne brigade from Donetsk Oblast. He was mobilized to Ukrainian army in January andlater he went to the war zone. He was killed in Avdiivka in Donetsk Oblast. He leaves his parents in a city of Energodar in Zaporizhzhya Oblast.

Mykola Martynyuk, 22, a soldier of the 95th airborne brigade from Poltava Oblast. He was killed near the checkpoint near Avdiivka. Martynyuk was the only son in his family, he leaves his parents in acity of Kremenchuk.

May 7

Dmytro Kozachonok, 20, a soldier of the 30th mechanized brigade of Rivne Oblast. Kozachonok was killed in mortar attack near the city of Artemivsk in Donetsk Oblast. He leaves a mother and two sisters in his native town in Rivne Oblast. Kozachonok’s family has been waiting for his body.

Serhiy Kolotaev, 30, a soldier of the 28th mechanized brigade from Kherson. He went to the war zone in October and was killed in a mortar shelling near Donetsk. He leaves his family in Kherson.

May 11

Bohdan Lishchynskiy, 22, a soldier of the 81st brigade from Khmelnytskiy Oblast. Lishchynskiy was a professional serviceman, he graduated from Odesa Military Academy in 2015 and volunteered to the war zone. He was killed in Donetsk Oblast.
