Kharkiv – The government should invest in the most promising scientific projects, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

“We should invest in projects that have prospects and that allow us
to improve our position on the international market… We should invest in
promising projects and spend all available assets on them, and not on
the number of scientists,” Azarov said in an interview with Kharkiv
regional television on Sept. 6.

The premier also said the investing of state funds in promising
scientific projects should be based on relevant feasibility studies.

“We’re ready to spend funds on the modernization of laboratories,
creation of material and technical conditions for experiments, tests,
necessary studies, but these costs should be based on certain
feasibility studies. These are tough conditions dictated to us by the
economic situation in our country and abroad,” Azarov said.

He added that the presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine supported the government’s approach to the issue.

“We’re working on such approaches. The government will consider,
approve them and only then will talking about the under funding [of
science] have any sense, as we should not fund an institution only
because it has 500, 600, or 700 of scientists. We should invest in the
scientific tasks that will be solved by the personnel,” Azarov said.
