The EU, Moldova and Ukraine have signed an agreement to strengthen their cooperation in border and customs matters, the press service of the EU Delegation in Ukraine has reported.
“The agreement foresees an enhanced mandate which consolidates the Memorandum of Understanding establishing the European Commission Border Assistance Mission to the Republic of Moldova and to Ukraine (EUBAM), as well as its extension for additional 24 months,” the statement reads.
The new mandate will support a smooth implementation of border and customs related aspects of the association agreements, as well as of the agreements on Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas (DCFTA), signed with both countries in 2014.
“It will allow in particular the use of more tailored strategies on border, customs and fiscal matters, and the provision of expert advice to border police, customs administration and other relevant state agencies,” the delegation said.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the European Commission by Director-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations Christian Danielsson, on behalf of Ukraine by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Olena Zerkal, and on behalf of the Republic of Moldova by H.E. Ambassador Eugen Caras.
