You're reading: European Union points at importance of applying international standards to two Russian servicemen detained in Ukraine

BRUSSELS - The European Union know about the detention of two Russian servicemen in Ukraine, including from the OSCE representatives who met the detained servicemen, the press service of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy has said.

‘We understand that they got medical treatment in the hospital and they both said that they were proposed to have Ukrainian lawyers who visited them. It is important that Ukrainian authorities continue applying international standards toward the two detained persons,’ the press service told Interfax-Ukraine.

The press service did not comment on the fact of the detention.As reported, Russian servicemen Yevgeny Yerofeyev and Alexandr Alexandrov were held near the town of Schastia in the Donbas conflict area on May 16. One of them was injured in the arm, the other in the leg.

On May 19, Ukrainian investigators charged Captain Yerofeyev and Sergeant Alexandrov with crimes stipulated in Article 258 3 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (participation in terrorist activities).

On May 22, Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky District Court ordered that both men be remanded in custody until July 19, inclusively.

At present, the men are being held at the Main Clinic Hospital of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry in Kyiv. They have undergone several surgeries.
