A gas explosion in Uzhgorod on Monday, August 29, in which three people were injured and a cafe burned down, has cut the gas supply in the city, while electricity and water supplies have been limited, the press service of Zakarpattia Regional State Administration has reported.

"Uzhgorod was left without natural gas as a result of an accident. Almost 5,000 residents of the regional center are currently without electricity and water supplies," the press service said.

Electricity has also been cut to the railway, and railway services to the town of Volozianka have been paralyzed.

One hundred and forty people have been evacuated from the streets near to the blast scene. Electricity supplies are expected to be restored within a day and gas supplies within a couple of days.

The gas explosion is believed to have been caused by pipeline damage by a firm which had been doing unpermitted work with underground electric power lines. The damage caused gas to leak into the air. A gas mixture also filled the sewerage system and wells of the electricity networks.

As reported, three people were injured in a gas explosion near a cafe in Uzhgorod on Monday. Two of them were delivered to an intensive care unit in critical condition and another one was hospitalized in a burns unit.
