You're reading: German foreign minister does not see Ukraine joining NATO

Berlin – German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has said he does not think that Ukraine's membership of NATO is possible.

“I don’t see any path leading [Ukraine] towards NATO membership,” he said at a press conference in Weimar on Tuesday.

The diplomat said that this was only his personal opinion and not an official German government line.

Steinmeier also said he did not consider it possible to quickly
resolve the crisis in Ukraine due to Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

“We cannot promise that this conflict will be resolved in the short term,” he said.

“[Russia’s and the West’s] positions are too far from each other,” Steinmeier added.
