Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg have discussed the political situation in Ukraine, the gas talks between Kyiv and Moscow, and Ukraine's relations with the European Union.

"For me this meeting was interesting, symbolicand enlightening in many ways," Lytvyn told reporters after a meeting with the Grand Duke on Tuesday.

According to the head of the parliament, during the meeting, the Grand Duke first of all inquired how Ukraine was coping with the conditions of its gas contracts with Russia. "This was the first thing about which the Grand Duke inquired," Lytvyn said.

Lytvyn told Grand Duke Henry that the countries were negotiating the revision of the natural gas price.

"Naturally, we talked about political processes, including [the jailed former Ukrainian Prime Minister] Yulia Tymoshenko’s case," the speaker said.

According to him, the meeting addressed the European future of Ukraine. Lytvyn noted that Duke Henri said that Luxembourg supported Ukraine in this matter, and wished the country to settle the issues related to Tymoshenko’s case as soon as possible, since this issue currently serves as an obstacle to the further development of relations between Ukraine and the EU.

The speaker also said that they touched on ways to tackle the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster in Ukraine.

In addition, the two officials discussed Ukraine’s relations with neighboring countries.
