You're reading: Kerry: Ukraine expected to implement de-escalation measures in coming days

The United States has said it hopes that acting Ukrainian authorities start to implement measures to de-escalate tensions and restore security for all citizens that have been agreed at Geneva meeting, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said.

“Over the next few days, over the course of this weekend and the
earliest part of next week, some of these steps [of the Ukrainian
government] have to be seen and be evident,” he said as the Geneva
meeting came to an end.

Washington hopes that the de-escalation of the crisis in Ukraine will
let Russia withdraw its troops from the border with Ukraine, U.S.
Secretary of State John Kerry said.

“They’ve made it clear that over a period of time, assuming this does
de-escalate, as the rights of the people are represented… as the
constitutional process unfolds and” the new government is installed,
Kerry said following four-party talks on Ukraine in Geneva on Thursday.

“They are absolutely prepared to begin to respond with respect to
troops… They have indicated that they have withdrawn one battalion,”
he said.

“Our hope is that as these steps are taken, that that can happen,” he added.
