Lviv regional council has declared the law "On the principles of state language policy" invalid on the territory of the region.

Sixty four deputies voted for this proposal.

Lviv Regional Council Deputy Iryna Farion initiated the proposal. She
proposed to make amendments to the program for development of Ukrainian
language and Ukrainian culture” adding a clause “to declare the law on
the principles of state policy language invalid on the territory of the
region.”

“I propose to declare invalid Kivalov’s (the author of the law) law
on the territory of Lviv region, as it is in essence anti-state, and
there were serious violations [of procedure] during its adoption,” she
said.

As reported, The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a bill initiated
by the Regions Party “On the principles of state language policy” on
July 3.

On Aug. 8, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych signed this law,
and charged the Cabinet of Ministers with creating a working group to
draw up proposals on improving the legislation.

The law came into force on Aug. 10. It foresees the possibility of
the existence of other official languages in those regions in which the
percentage of persons from national minorities exceed 10%.
