Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said he supports the idea of using the Chornobyl area as an international laboratory for research, situations modeling and the development of recommendations.

According to the press service of the Ukrainian parliament, on October 7, during a meeting with a delegation from the Japanese House of Representatives headed by Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Administration of the House of Representatives Tadamasa Kodaira, Lytvyn said he supports the idea of "using the Chornobyl zone as an international testing area – an international laboratory for research, situations modeling and the development of respective recommendations."

Lytvyn thanked the Japanese people for the participation in the events on the Chornobyl issue, and said, "we have to do a lot for the understanding of nuclear safety and development of respective recommendations."

The Japanese MPs took interest in further cooperation with Ukraine in the sphere of nuclear energy, in particular, on issues related to safety and developing alternative energy sources.

They also said that they are very interested in supplies of farming products and food from Ukraine to Japan.

Lytvyn positively evaluated the prospects for the realization of energy saving projects by Japanese companies, the introduction of innovative technologies and the drawing of investment into Ukraine’s farming industry.

"I hope our cooperation will be stable. Ukraine is rich in natural resources and people. Today we are at the stage when we have to learn how to live a civilized life, and we are working on this," he said.

The Japanese parliamentarians invited Lytvyn to make an official visit to Japan.
