There are 60,000 Ukrainian troops currently serving in the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) zone in eastern Ukraine, chief of the contract personnel department of the personnel center of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Taras Zabolotny has said.

Over 70 percent of the soldiers who were mobilized last spring have already been demobilized, he said.

“Under a presidential decree, demobilization is being held between March 18 and May 1 among those who were mobilized last spring. As of today, over 24,400 have already been discharged from military service,” he said at a briefing in Kyiv on April 2.

Those discharged include 35,763 servicemen, over 6,000 officers, and 29,700 sergeants and enlisted soldiers.

“The specific feature of the current demobilization is that all the servicemen who haven’t got the status of participant in military operations will be dismissed with a complete package of documents required for being granted this status,” he said.

He also said that all personnel who cannot leave their units for certain reasons – medical treatment, captivity, MIA – will be entitled to all due social guarantees and benefits.
