You're reading: Mykola Azarov: Ukraine should be neutral state

Head of the Committee for the Salvation of Ukraine Mykola Azarov believes that it is important for Ukraine not to join any military blocs, but maintain good relations both with Moscow and the European Union.

“I have clear ideas, which I have articulated more than once. Ukraine ought to be a neutral state due to its very location. There can be no doubt about that. We should not enter any military blocs. It is vital for us to maintain good relations both with Russia and the European Union,” Azarov told a press conference in Moscow on Aug. 3.

“I stress that these relations are vital. For this reason, the law on Ukraine’s non-aligned status was adopted in 2010,” he said.

For his part, former Ukrainian MP Volodymyr Oliynyk, who has been nominated by the committee for Ukraine’s president, said that no one should interfere in Ukraine’s affairs.

“We do not want anyone – either America, Europe or Russia – to interfere in our domestic affairs. We are able to make our own decisions. It is highly important,” Oliynyk said.
