ODESA - A center for non-proliferation of nuclear weapons has opened in Odesa, an Interfax correspondent reported on Aug. 28.

The agency will be situated at the Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University, and its opening is the result of a seven-year cooperation between the university and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.

The center is expected to become a platform for cooperation between scientists and governmental agencies that oversee the country’s nuclear-power industry. In addition, the center will take part in various specialized research projects and train nuclear safety experts.

The Safety Authority is an agency of the Swedish Ministry for the Environment. It is a central body in charge of efficient radiation protection of the public and the environment. It was opened in 2008 to replace its predecessors, the Agency for Radiation Protection and the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Energy, which had operated since the 1970s.
