You're reading: Party of Regions: Tymoshenko’s arrest is absolutely lawful and Ukrainians understand that

The Party of Regions believes that the decision to change the preventive measure for ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko for arrest is lawful.

"The court has made a well-formed decision, because there were all legal grounds," MP Volodymyr Oliynyk (the Party of Regions) said on TV Channel 5.

"Yulia Tymoshenko prompted the court to make such a decisionby her behavior. The whole country could see that she did not respect the law, the citizens of Ukraine," he added.

The MP said that Tymoshenko by her behavior destroyed the judicial system. "Yes, our courts are not perfect, but to destroy them totally… If the court would not have reacted in some way to this behavior, then all citizens would not stand up at court, think that we have no courts, offend the courts," the MP said.

"We certainly need to consider [the opinion of the European community], where there are European standards," Oliynyk said, commenting on the reaction of the European community representatives to the arrest of Tymoshenko.

"But it is unacceptable for foreign institutions to interfere in the internal affairs of Ukraine, because former Ukrainian prime minister Pavlo Lazarenko’s trial, which was held in the United States, can be assessed in the same way. But it was not assessed this way," he said.

Oliynyk expressed confidence that Ukrainian citizens understand what’s happening in Tymoshenko’s trial.
