You're reading: Peskov: Kyiv hasn’t informed Moscow of gas contracts litigation

Kyiv has not officially informed Moscow of its intention to start court action in order to sever existing gas contracts with Russia, the Russian prime minister's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told Interfax.

"We have no information as to whether a decision has been finally reached or what could serve as grounds for such a decision," Peskov said.

"Russia works on the basis that there are valid agreements between the relevant organizations of Russia and Ukraine and that Russia is honoring commitments under those agreements in full," he said.

"Of course we hope for reciprocity in this issue with our Ukrainian partners," Peskov said.

Ukrainian press reports quoted Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov as saying the Russian authorities’ position on the gas issues forces Ukraine to think about seeking a court ruling to terminate their gas supply contract.

In an interview with the Ukrainian weekly Korrespondent Azarov said that he has already told Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during gas talks: "You are driving us into a corner, from which we have only one exit: contract termination."

The Ukrainian government has already consulted with national and international experts over the prospects for litigation with Moscow and is ready to institute proceedings, Azarov told the weekly.
