Russia is becoming appealing to other peoples who have the right to self-determination, but each particular request on being admitted as part of the Russian Federation should be treated extremely carefully, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

“In the modern world, some countries at certain stages of their development become appealing to others and start playing the role of a social, economic, and other magnet. They form integration centers around themselves and get involved in these integration centers, which is possible only on the basis of mutual benefit. Colonization methods don’t work any more now,” Peskov said in a Russian TV program to be shown on Sunday in reply to a host’s question as to whether Crimea’s absorption by Russia could be followed by the absorption of Transdniestria or other territories.

As modern Russia is becoming appealing, the principle of self-determination starts working here, but “any particular case should be treated extremely carefully,” he said.
