Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree on May 26 to approve the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC)'s decision of May 6 regarding the creation of a new system of Ukraine's national security.

“The president’s decree has approved the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council decision dated May 6, 2015, ‘On the Strategy of the Ukrainian National Security’,” the presidential press service said.

According to the strategy, the national security policy of Ukraine will focus on the restoration of territorial integrity within the internationally recognized state borders of Ukraine, the creation of an efficient sector of security and defense, and the promotion of the national defense potential, in particular, through deeper defense industry and military-technological cooperation with NATO and EU member states and full independence from Russia in the production of armaments and military hardware.

The document also envisaged reform and development of intelligence, counterintelligence and law enforcement agencies, reform of the state management system and a new quality of anti-corruption policy.

A key task of the strategy is Ukraine’s integration in the European Union and formation of conditions for its accession to NATO.

The document said that the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement laid down strategic guidelines for systemic political and socioeconomic reforms in Ukraine, and cooperation with NATO promoted democratic values and a stable secure environment in Ukraine, was an important instrument of support to reforms, including those in the field of security and defense, and ensured the joint deterrence of modern threats and challenges.

The document also envisages national security measures in the foreign policy, economic and energy security, cyber security, and security of information resources and critical infrastructures.
