Pope Francis fully supports the Minsk settlement plan for Donbas, with which Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko familiarized him at a meeting at the Vatican, the Ukrainian presidential press service reported on Nov. 20.

“The president said great significance at the meeting was attached to promoting peace on Ukrainian soil. The Pope is very well aware of the details of the Minsk plan, approves of it, and sees it as the only way to bring peace to Ukraine,” the statement says.

“The steps that the Church is making today are very important and essential to us,” Poroshenko was quoted as saying following the meeting.

The Ukrainian leader described his meeting with the Pope as “very touching.”

“The main result of the meeting is His Holiness’s words that we always remember Ukraine and pray for Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.

“After visiting the Vatican and His Holiness, I was convinced once again that truth is with us, the Lord is with us, and His prayers are with Ukraine,” Poroshenko said.
