Attempts to hold elections in territories in eastern Ukraine not controlled by Kyiv will mean Russia breaks agreements reached in Minsk, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said at a news conference on July 2.

“The attempts to hold on Oct.18 illegitimate elections not meeting Ukrainian legislation and Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) criteria will mean a harsh attack of Russia on the Minsk agreements reached on Feb. 12, 2015. I am certain that this will be extremely irresponsible and will have devastating consequences for the process of deescalation of tension in certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions,” Poroshenko said.

It has been reported that head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Alexander Zakharchenko scheduled local elections in the DPR for Oct. 18, 2015.
