Some 50,000 troops are currently deployed in the war-torn zone in eastern Ukraine, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko has said.

“A year ago we had between 3,000 and 5,000 combat-ready troops. Concurrently, there were between 17,000 and 23,000 troops in Donbas who could not, of course, close the most dangerous area of the strike. I can now reveal very important figures: the number of troops in the anti-terrorist operation zone alone is around 50,000. This is a powerful group that is capable of defending its country,” the president said on the “Year of Poroshenko” program on the occasion of the first anniversary of his presidency, aired on Ukrainian television channels on May 28 evening.
