You're reading: Poroshenko says Ukrainian to remain sole national language

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that the Ukrainian language will remain the only national language in Ukraine.

Most Ukrainian citizens support this position, Poroshenko told students of the Chernihiv Pedagogical University on March 31.

“We were pressured at one time to make the Russian language Ukraine’s second language and turn Ukraine into a federation. I don’t fear this, friends. I am ready to call a referendum on this issue any time. And the Ukrainian people will say their emphatic ‘No’ to supporters of a second national language and federal status,” Poroshenko said.
