The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine approved on March 31 an indictment against former Head of the Interior Ministry's External Surveillance Department Oleksiy Pukach.

The case was sent to Pechersky District Court in Kyiv, the Media Relations Department of Prosecutor General’s Office reported on Friday.

The pre-trial investigation established that Pukach committed the premeditated murder of journalist Georgy Gongadze.

"The pre-trial investigation has established that the defendant, being an official, in response to the orders and instructions from Interior Minister Yuriy Kravchenko and other officials, criminal cases against whom are being investigated separately, in May-September 2000 exceeded his powers in relation to public figure Oleksiy Podolsky, and journalist Georgy Gongadze, and intentionally committed the murder of the latter," the statement reads.

The investigators also found out that in July 2003, Pukach gave an unlawful order to subordinate police officers to destroy official documents, including those about the illegal shadowing of journalist Gongadze, and thus prevented the pre-trial investigation authorities from solving the murder case.

In addition, the PGO issued a resolution about the closing of a criminal case against the late former Interior Minister Yuriy Kravchenko
