You're reading: Rada speaker warns Italian MPs against visiting Crimea

Chairman of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Groysman has expressed concern over reported intentions of several deputies of the Five Stars party of the Italian parliament to visit Crimea next autumn.

The Rada press service says Groysman sent a corresponding letter to President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian parliament Laura Boldrini.

The letter says that such a possible unfriendly step by individual Italian MPs won’t promote the strengthening of Ukrainian-Italian relations. Groysman also said that such steps will crudely contradict the norms of international law and Ukrainian legislation.

“The visit of representatives of the Five Stars movement to the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea and meetings with the local illegitimate administration will contradict the consolidated position of the European Union about the unacceptability of the occupation by the Russian Federation of the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea,” the letter says.

Groysman said that the Ukrainian side will be forced to consider the introduction of restrictions against the relevant Italian politicians, including a ban on their travels to Ukraine, should such a visit take place.

At the same time Groysman confirmed the readiness of the Verkhovna Rada to increase efforts for the further development of a bilateral interparliamentary dialogue.
