An armed clash broke out on the outskirts of the city of Sloviansk in southeastern Ukraine early on Tuesday morning, a representative of the local self-defense forces has said, adding that armored personnel carriers can be seen moving in the direction of the city.

“The information we are receiving at the moment indicates that a gun
battle erupted on the city outskirts. Gunfire and explosions can be
heard. Our activists have reported that armored personnel carriers are
moving in the direction of the city,” the Sloviansk self-defense forces’
coordinator, who is known only by his first name Mykhailo, told
Interfax on Tuesday.

The activist claims that the village council building is burning in
the village of Andriyivka, located near Sloviansk, where gunfire can
also be heard.

Mobile units of the self-defense forces are en route to the area in
order to establish what has actually happened there, as well as whether
anyone has been injured and needs medical care, he said.

Interfax has so far been unable to obtain information from other sources concerning the ongoing events in Sloviansk.
