Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) head Valentyn Nalyvaichenko says the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine cannot come to a halt.

“As soon as the civilian population stops protecting them [the separatists], it will take just one day to restore order, in particular, in Sloviansk,” Nalyvaichenko said in an interview with Channel 5 on Monday evening.

As to whether the anti-terrorist operation should come to an end, as this is demanded by the authorities of eastern regions, the Ukrainian Security Service chief said: “The anti-terrorist operation against sabotage groups must not stop on any account.”

“We understand the people in authority and would like to help them restore peace in Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and Donetsk,” Nalyvaichenko added.

“Cities can have normal supplies if there is peace and there are no impediments from armed groups or operations of law enforcement authorities. This is the opinion of the local authorities. And we respect it. But, we will be able to help after the problem is worked out and terrorists and saboteurs lose support from the local population,” the Security Service head stressed.
