You're reading: Schulz says Ukrainian conflict can only be settled politically, with Russia’s involvement

President of the European Parliament (EP) Martin Schulz believes that the conflict in eastern Ukraine can only be settled politically and with Russia's involvement.

All involved parties and the international community must do their best to prevent the situation getting completely out of control. There’s only one solution and that’s a political solution that can be found only together with Russia, Schulz said at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on July 3.

Schulz noted the importance of talks with Russia.

There’s no choice. Talks have to be held with Russia, during which we won’t abandon our principles, and there will be no business as usual, as the Minsk agreements aren’t being adhered to completely, he said.

Schulz noted the necessity of avoiding war and stirring up nationalist sentiment by both parties of the conflict.

Schulz said there’s no military solution to the conflict. All the parties know very well that they have to restrict themselves, restrain themselves, and avoid starting a war and stirring up nationalist sentiment.

Schulz said that history proves that when nationalist sentiments are stirred, the people lose control.
