Some 5 percent of the population in Ukraine at present have a standard of living much higher than the other 95 percent, the head of the department for studying the living standards of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Liudmyla Cherenko, has said.

“Today we can say that 5 percent of the population live in a way different from the remaining 95 percent, and these 95 percent are graded from the poorest to the richest people,” she said at a press conference in Kyiv dedicated to the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

According to her, 5 percent of the richest citizens of Ukraine stand out among the rest: they have a qualitatively different level of consumption and the quality level of life in comparison with the others.

Cherenko noted that official statistics data do not always give a full picture, as it is based, as in all countries of the world, according to a survey of household living conditions.

“These studies should not cover the group of the richest and those who live on the street, as these are extreme groups,” she added.
