The International Criminal Court (ICC) has received a request from the Ukrainian government to investigate the events that occurred on Independence Square, widely known as the Maidan, in the center of Kyiv from Nov. 21, 2013 to Feb. 22, 2014.

“Today, April 17, 2014, the Registrar of the International Criminal
Court (ICC), Herman von Hebel, received a declaration lodged by Ukraine
accepting the ICC’s jurisdiction with respect to alleged crimes
committed in its territory from 21 Nov. 2013 to 22 Feb. 2014,”
the court said in a press release.

“The declaration was lodged under article 12(3) of the Rome Statute,
the founding treaty of the ICC, which enables a State not party to the
Statute to accept the exercise of jurisdiction of the Court,” it said.
