Ukrainian Communist Party leader Petro Symonenko is going to be issued with a notice to arrive at the Security Service (SBU) headquarters for an interrogation on April 2, SBU's chief spokesperson said on April 1.

“The Ukrainian Security Service is checking the circumstances of the presence of the leader of the Communist Party of Ukraine, Symonenko, at the plenary meeting of [the central committee of] the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. The criminal proceedings include investigations into his public statements and comments to Russian television channels, including the Rossiya 24 channel, on March 28 to find out whether his words contain appeals for a crime against the foundations of the national security of Ukraine,” Olena Hitlianska told Interfax-Ukraine.

She said an SBU official was due to hand Symonenko a summons to the interrogation, to be held at the SBU’s Chief Investigation Department.

She did not say whether Symonenko was currently in Ukraine.

Earlier, Hitlianska had told a briefing no official information was available on Symonenko’s whereabouts but that, according to media reports, he was in Russia currently.
