You're reading: Ukraine must stop fraud on its energy market – EU Commissioner Hahn

EU Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn has urged Ukraine to bring its energy efficiency in line with EU standards.

“It could bring your energy efficiency in line with EU average… Today, Ukraine wastes energy 10-11 times more than the European average. But this waste is not only because of old leaky pipes, it’s also because few are able to take away some gas in order to run their companies, their factories. And here we are talking about fraud, ladies and gentlemen, fraud,” Johannes Hahn said at the International support for Ukraine conference in Kyiv on April 28.

According to him, such schemes must be stopped, as it’s in fact embezzlement of state property. If Ukraine manages to solve these issues, and the first steps are already promising, it will be going in the right direction, EU Commissioner added.
