BRUSSELS – Ukraine and NATO have entered the final stage of drawing up an agreement aimed at removing nuclear waste that has been stored at former military bases since Soviet times.

Technical work on the document is coming to an end, Head of Ukraine’s Mission to NATO and Ambassador of Ukraine to Belgium Ihor Dolhov said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

"It will be finished in the coming month, following which the document will be signed and its implementation will start," he said.

According to Dolhov, during the implementation of the project, nuclear waste storage facilities at former Soviet military bases will be closed down.

As reported, Kyiv and NATO started work on the project last year, when all preparations were completed and Germany took up coordination and took on a significant part of the funding. As a part of preliminary work, NATO experts made valuation visits to hazardous storage sites, and the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) sent a risk evaluation mission, on the results of which conclusions on the need to implement this project were made.
