Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Petro Mekhed has announced that the identities of almost all servicemen killed in the 'Ilovaisk pocket' in 2014 have already been established and their families have received compensation.

“Nearly all bodies have been identified and, consequently, if they were servicemen of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, their families have received compensation. Today comrades-in-arms and commanders are communicating with the parents and are helping the families [of killed soldiers]. Children have started school, and they have been provided with everything necessary,” Mekhed said in Kyiv on Aug. 29, as first-year students of the Military Institute of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv took their enlistment oath.

Each agency pays financial compensation to the families of soldiers killed near Ilovaisk separately, he noted.

“For example, the Defense Ministry has a n ad hoc commission which examines documents and, after drawing the appropriate conclusions, transfers money to military registration and enlistment offices, which then give this money to the families,” the deputy defense minister said.

The Ilovaisk tragedy is being investigated by the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office, and the conclusions of the inquiry will be made public after it is completed, he said.
